Concrete Treat: Concrete Blanket & Sealer Results

Report No: EN94-0162.4
Revised: 9/11/94
Revision of: CM93.131.3R
Issued: 1/12/94

SUBJECT: Approval testing of Concrete Treat: Concrete Blanket and Sealer

MATERIAL EVALUATED:

A sample of Concrete Treat concrete sealer was received on 6/10/93. The material came in a plastic pail and had the consistency of water.

PROCEDURE:

This material was tested in accordance with ASTM C836 (waterproofing membrane), ASTM D466 (capillary action), and ASTM D2939 (protective coatings) section 16 and 17, except where noted. This material was applied in a one coat brush application for all the tests.

SUMMARY OF RESULTS:

  1. Film Thickness on Vertical Surface (ASTM C836) = .005" ave.
  2. Resistance to Water Action (ASTM D466)
    1. no reemulsification
    2. excellent adhesion
  3. Flexibility (ASTM 2939 section 16). No cracking.
  4. Resistance to Water (ASTM 2939 section 17)
    1. no blistering
    2. no reemulsification
    3. excellent adhesion

TEST PROCEDURE

Test Apparatus:

The test apparatus consisted of a freezer, 2' mandrel, application brush, copper foil, brass plates and masks, vernier calipers, and a razor blade.

Test Specimen:

The concrete was cut into the correct sizes required by the different Standards. After the specimens were cut, the sealer was applied and allowed to cure for several days before the tests were begun.

Conduct of the Test:

The material was tested in accordance with the Standards, except for the following:

  1. Sealer was applied in a one brush type application for all tests.
  2. Flexibility - ASTM D2939 - Sealer was applied to copper foil that was sanded with 200 grit sand paper.
  3. Resistance to Water - ASTM D2939 - Brass plates were sanded with 200 grit sandpaper.

TEST DATA and RESULTS:

1. Film Thickness on Vertical Surface (ASTM C836)

3. Flexibility (ASTM D2939 section 16)
     a. No Cracking

4. Resistance to Water (ASTM D2939 section 17)
     a. No Blistering
     b. No reemulsificatoin
     c. Excellent adhesion

OBSERVATION and COMMENTS:

The sealer had a very thin film thickness because most of the sealer is absorbed into the concrete. The sealer passed the resistance to water action, flexibility, and resistance to water tests.

CONCLUSIONS:

  1. Material did penetrate the concrete so it was unable to leave a thick film on face of the concrete.
  2. Material passed the Resistance to Water Action test.
  3. Material passed the Flexibility test.
  4. Material passed the Resistance to Water test.
